CLEVELAND, Ohio – The No. 5 Northwestern women's fencing team finished sixth and three Wildcats took home All-American honors at the NCAA Championships on Sunday.
Senior Yvonne Chart and first-years Julia Falinska and Alyssa Chen earned All-American honors with top-12 finishes. This marked the sixth time in program history that Northwestern produced three All-Americans in the same season.
Pauline Hamilton finished 18th in epée and Emine Yücel finished 20th in saber to round out NU's representatives at the NCAA Championships.
"I am incredibly proud of our team, both of their performance at NCAA Championships and their performance all season long," said head coach Zach Moss. "They showed resilience by continuing to fight throughout one of the most grueling competitions in all of fencing. They kept working and grinding out victories to earn a tremendous result."
Northwestern's sixth place finish among women's teams marks the program's highest finish since 2003-04, where they also finished sixth. This also marks the fourth time in program history NU has finished sixth.
Falinska's eighth place finish is the highest by a Northwestern fencer since Dayana Sarkisova finished eighth in 2013. The first-year from Warsaw, Poland earned All-MFC Second Team honors and ranked second among first-year epéeists with 27 duals wins this season. She and Alyssa Chen became the second and third first-year fencers to earn All-American honors under Zach Moss.
Chart earned her second straight All-American honors following a 10th place finish, up two spots from one year ago. The Truro, U.K. native earned First Team All-MFC recognition earlier this season and wraps up her remarkable Northwestern career with 167 career wins.
Chen concluded her impressive first season with a 12th place finish. The San Diego native earned All-MFC Second Team honors and picked up 30 duals wins this season, the second-most among NU first-years.
Yücel concluded her illustrious #B1GCats career with a 20th place finish in her second NCAA Championships appearance. The Istanbul, Turkey native earned All-MFC Second Team honors and picked up 37 duals wins this season, the second-most on the team. Yücel finishes with 162 career wins.
Hamilton finished 18th in her third NCAA Championships appearance. She earned First Team All-MFC recognition this season and finished fifth at NCAA Regionals, the highest among NU epéeists. Her 38 duals wins this season were the most on the team, and her 142 career wins remain the most on the epée squad.
The NCAA Championships mark the conclusion of the Wildcats' season. The #B1GCats will still be in action with individual competitions this spring, including USA Fencing Championships and North American Cup in April.
