EVANSTON, Ill. — The Northwestern men's soccer program announced its spring slate on Wednesday, which includes a trip to Europe to take on international competition. The Wildcats will also compete in the annual Chicago Cup in late April.
Northwestern will kick off its spring season with back-to-back weekends at Ryan Fieldhouse and Wilson Field. The Wildcats will host Notre Dame, Saturday, Mar. 2 at 4:15 p.m. and UWM on Sunday, Mar. 10. at 1 p.m. These contests are closed to the general public.
"We are really excited for our spring schedule. In addition to playing in Ryan Fieldhouse and Wilson Field for the first time, it is a special year as we are traveling to Madrid for a matchup with Real Madrid's U19 team and to Liverpool with their U23 team," said Head Coach Tim Lenahan. "With my former player, Santiago Solari now the Head Coach for the First Team at Real Madrid, we will have access to the world's most successful clubs that no other college program has ever had."
Lenahan last visited Spain for professional development in May of 2017, where he spent time with coaches of Real Madrid's Castilla team. The mid-March trip will also be a homecoming for first year forward, Jose Del Valle, who started nine games for the Wildcats this past season.
The #B1GCats will resume play on Apr. 6 for the first round of the Chicago Cup in Rockford, Ill. and will host the second round of the tournament in Martin Stadium.
To wrap up the spring season, Chicago's Big Ten Team will play in a charity match against Xavier to benefit Down Syndrome research in honor of Devin Fleming, daughter of Xavier Head Coach and former Northwestern assistant coach, Andy Fleming.
"There are so many great things to look forward to this spring," Lenahan added. "With our young and talented group, this will be a special time to come together and build a strong foundation for the upcoming season."
