Hot Start Has Wildcats In The Hunt at Bruin Wave Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — No. 14 Northwestern held a first-round lead and despite struggling in the second round of the day are in the hunt at the Bruin Wave Invitational through 36 holes.
The Wildcats led the 15-team field at 7-over through 18 holes and were led by senior Janet Mao, senior Stephanie Lau and junior Brooke Riley, who were all in the top 11.

Mao was tied for fourth after shooting an even-par, 72, in the opening round that featured 16 pars, a pair of birdies and two bogeys. Lau was tied for sixth at 1-over and Riley was tied for 11th at 2-over.
First year Kelly Su shot an opening round 74 to round out the Wildcats' scorers in the play-five, score-four format.
Northwestern was unable to maintain the momentum from the opening round and stumbled on the second 18 of the day, shooting 18 over to fall to tied for fourth at 25-over.
Three teams were unable to complete play in the second round due to darkness and will continue action at 9 a.m. CT before round three begins later in the morning. Oregon leads the field after day one at 16-over, but has a trio of players with three holes to play.
First year Kelly Sim highlighted the Wildcats' second round with a team-best 3-over, 75. Sim bounced back from a disappointing morning by making a pair of birdies on the front nine and posting an eagle on the par-5 10th hole.
Riley also shot a 3-over, 75, in round two and is tied for 11th along with Lau at 5-over through 36 holes.
The Wildcats will conclude the tournament on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m. CT.
