Six Wildcats Earn Medals in Day One of MFC Championships

COLUMBUS, OH. – Six Wildcats received medals on Saturday afternoon in day one of the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. The No. 2 Northwestern fencing program had 17 fencers place in the top-10 in their respective weapons.
The individual competition followed a pools and main draw format, with the top fencers in each weapon receiving a bye into the draw.
Pauline Hamilton received the silver medal in the Epee competition after defeating teammate Maggie Snider to advance to the finals, giving Snider the bronze medal to tie with fellow Wildcat, Natalie Kim. In Saber, Alexis Browne advanced from round of 32 all the way to the semifinals to tie for third.
The Wildcat foilists dominated the competition as five fencers advanced to the top-8 quarterfinals. Sarah Filby defeated Amy Jia to tie for third with Yvonne Chart who defeated Alyssa Chen in the quarterfinals.
Northwestern will compete for its second consecutive MFC team title and sixth overall after becoming conference champions last year. Competition begins Sunday, Feb. 24 at 9:30 a.m. CT.
