Seven ‘Cats Set for Final Regular-Season Test at Junior Olympics
2/13/2019 12:27:00 PM | Women's Fencing
EVANSTON, Ill. – Seven members of the No. 2 Northwestern women's fencing team will travel to Denver, Colorado for their final regular season test this weekend, Feb. 16-17.
First-years Alyssa Chen, Natalie Kim, Jerrica Liao, Elina Moon, Emma Scala, Maggie Snider, and Robyn Song will be competing in the four-day Junior Olympics event, the national championships for fencers born between 1999 and 2005.
Snider, Scala, and Kim will compete in the Junior Women's Epée and Song will compete in Junior Women's Saber on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT. The trio of Chen, Liao, and Moon will compete in the Junior Women's Foil event on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT.
The Junior Olympics have the same format as a NAC Competition, with a round of pools before direct elimination bouts to determine a champion through the main draw. Fencers receive points for a top-32 finish, and occasionally for a top-64 finish if the field is large enough.
The seven participants have all contributed to a remarkable season by Northwestern's first-years. Snider's 35 wins lead all first-years and ranks third overall on the squad, while Liao's 22-1 record boasts the highest winning percentage (.957) of any Wildcat with at least 15 wins this season. Chen, Kim, Moon, and Song each have at least 25 wins this season, and Scala has contributed 18 of her own.
Northwestern concluded duals season with three more wins at the Duke Meet last weekend. The 'Cats defeated No. 6 Duke, Air Force, and Boston College to bring its overall record to 39-5 and an .886 winning percentage, the program's highest since the 2009-10 campaign.
The remainder of the NU squad has the weekend to rest as the Wildcats prepare for the postseason, which starts next week at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
