‘Cats Conclude Duals Season at Duke

2/10/2019 7:06:00 PM | Women's Fencing

DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 2 Northwestern women's fencing team wrapped up its final duals meet of the regular season on a positive note, defeating 3 of 5 opponents at the Duke Meet on Sunday.

The Wildcats defeated host No. 6 Duke, Air Force, and Boston College, while falling to No. 4 Penn State and North Carolina.

At 39-5 (.886), NU concluded duals season with its highest duals winning percentage since going 45-4 (.918) in the 2009-10 campaign.

"I'm very proud of this team and the season that we've had," said head coach Zach Moss. "The improvement this group has shown over the last three years speaks volumes to their dedication and hard work. I'm excited to transition into the postseason to see what this group can accomplish."

Northwestern started the day off strong, with the saber and foil squads picking up 5-4 decisions. However, it would not be enough as the North Carolina epéeists rallied for the 14-13 upset win.

The 'Cats would regroup and respond well with a tight 14-13 win over Air Force. 3-0 sweeps from Pauline Hamilton, Amy Jia, and Emine Yücel propelled NU to victory.

Northwestern went on to defeat Boston College, 17-10. Marta Amador Molina and Maggie Snider each contributed a 3-0 sweep.

In the first of two ranked matchups of the afternoon, the Wildcats faced nationally-ranked Duke for the second consecutive week. A 7-2 effort by the epéeists provided the spark, leading the way to a nailbiting 14-13 NU victory.

The #B1GCats wrapped up the meet against No. 4 Penn State. The NU foilists went 8-1, including 3-0 efforts from Sarah Filby and Alyssa Chen, but the Nittany Lions escaped with a 14-13 win.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will conclude its regular season with the Junior Olympics individual event in Denver, Colorado over the long President's Day weekend (Feb. 15-18).
