LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Northwestern capped off a successful weekend at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational this weekend, capped off by Ryan Deakin taking home first place in the 157 lb division for a second-straight year.
Also turning in impressive performances was redshirt first-year Michael DeAugustino, who placed third in the 125 lb division, along with Yahya Thomas, who also took third at 149 lbs.
Deakin's phenomenal showing was headlined by two emphatic wins over FloWrestling's No. 1 and No. 2 ranked wrestlers on Saturday. In the semis, he defeated No. 2 David Carr (Iowa State) by a 9-3 decision and then followed that up with a 6-2 decision over No. 1 Hayden Hidlay (NC State) in the tournament finals. Deakin did not trail throughout either bout.
Deakin also recorded pins in each of his first two bouts to open the tournament on Friday, making him one of just three wrestlers in the entire tournament to have a pin in each of the first two championship rounds. The redshirt-junior from Broomfield, Colo. now sits at a perfect 8-0 record on the year.
DeAugustino, who was not ranked entering the tournament, had a breakout weekend as he went 5-1 with wins over two top-10 seeds. After recording a pin in his opening match, DeAugustino defeated No. 15 Jacob Schwarm (Northern Iowa) for the second time this season in a 4-2 sudden victory decision. Later on Friday, DeAugustino defeated Michigan's Jack Medley by a 12-5 decision to punch a ticket to the semis. After a narrow 3-0 loss in the semis, he bounced back by taking a 6-3 decision over the tournament's No. 6 seed, Brandon Courtney (Arizona State) and a 5-2 decision over Virginia Tech's Joey Prata to earn third place honors.
Ranked the No. 8 seed in the tournament, Thomas continued the impressive start to his redshirt sophomore season by going 6-1 en route to a third place finish. Ranked No. 13 in FloWrestling's poll entering the weekend, Thomas pulled off wins over No. 8 Brock Zacherl (Clarion) via a 7-5 decision, as well as No. 7 Griffin Parriott (Purdue) in a 10-3 decision in the third place match. Thomas improves to 8-2 on the season, with his only two setbacks coming to No. 5 Max Thomsen (Northern Iowa) by a combined margin of two points.
Also placing sixth in the 165 lb division was Shayne Oster, who went 4-3 on the weekend while facing stout competition in his class.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Dec. 29-30, when they host the 57th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands championships, held at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The event is expected feature some of the highest-ranked wrestlers and teams in the nation, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Purdue and Wisconsin from the Big Ten. For the first time ever, this year's event will be sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. Fans can purchase tickets to this year's Midlands' tournament here.
