
'Cats Race Past Illinois on Road in Big Ten Opener

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Northwestern opened up Big Ten play with a dominant 77-50 win on the road against rivals Illinois on Saturday at the State Farm Center.
The Wildcats improved to 11-1 on the season while dropping the Illini to 9-3. The 'Cats have now bested Illinois in their last nine meetings dating back to 2013.
Junior guard Lindsey Pulliam led the offense with a season-high 27 points on 11-22 shooting, along with six rebounds and three assists. Pulliam now has four games this season with 25+ points after recording four total in the last two seasons combined.
Senior center Abbie Wolf recorded her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds on 8-13 shooting. Abi Scheid was the other double-digit scorer for the 'Cats with 11 points.
Sophomore guard Veronica Burton posted a quadruple-nickel, finishing with six points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals.
The Wildcat defense held its eighth opponent this season to 50 or fewer points. The Illini shot 2-20 from deep. Northwestern also continued its stellar assist-to-turnover ratio this camapaign with 21 assists to jsut 12 turnovers.
Northwestern returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena for its Big Ten home opener on Tue. Dec. 31 against No. 12 Maryland. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on BTN.
The team will also honor head coach Joe McKeown prior to the game for earning his 700th career win on Dec. 20th against East Carolina.
