Wildcats Take Five Bouts, But Fall in Season Opener at No. 11 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, VA. — In its season opener, No. 21 Northwestern dropped a tight dual that came down to the final bout, ultimately seeing the Wildcats on the other side of a 21-18 Hokies' victory. The match coined, "Mat on the Mound" showdown – took place outdoors at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.

Despite the final result, there were still many noteworthy moments for the Northwestern grapplers, who emerged victorious in five of the 10 bouts.

Sebastian Rivera (133), Yahya Thomas (149) and No. 3 Ryan Deakin (157) all earned major decisions today, contributing four points each to the team score. For Rivera, wrestling up a weight class from where he currently ranks No. 3 at 125 lbs, his 13-4 major decision came against No. 15 Collin Gerardi.

In similar fashion, Deakin's 12-3 bonus-point victory came over No. 18 B.C. LaPrade, who was recently earned the ACC Wrestler of the Week.

Yahya Thomas's dominant 12-2 major decision, complete with multiple takedowns and a four-point near fall, was also critical in keeping Chicago's Big Ten team competitive in the meet.

Arguably the biggest win of the dual for the Wildcats came at 197, when redshirt first-year wrester Lucas Davison earned a gritty 5-3 decision with a takedown late in the third stanza to give Northwestern an 18-17 lead heading into the tenth and final bout of the afternoon at heavyweight.

Fellow Northwestern grappler Tyler Morland also earned a convincing 6-1 victory at 174 lbs to get his season off to a 1-0 start.

Northwestern is back in action on November 17 for the Wildcats' home opener in Welsh-Ryan Arena. NU will battle No. 14 Northern Iowa.
