EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe McKeown has named senior Abi Scheid, junior Lindsey Pulliam, and sophomore Veronica Burton as team captains for the 2019-20 season.
Abi Scheid is in her third year as a captain as a senior. She missed eight games due to injury during the 2018-19 season and still led the 'Cats with 47 three-pointers. Scheid averaged 4.8 rebounds per game, the second highest mark on the team, while adding 9.8 points and 33.4 minutes per game.
"We are excited to have Abi as a co-captain for her third year," McKeown said. "This says so much for her high character and leadership ability. As a senior and a great player she has the respect of her teammates, the coaching staff and everyone at Northwestern."
Junior Lindsey Pulliam has already received multiple preseason honors heading into the upcoming season, including the preseason All Big-Ten Team. She earned a first team All-Big Ten selection last season after averaging 16.5 points, the best fifth-best scoring output in the conference, along with 1.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 34.6 minutes per game. Pulliam also became the fastest player in NU history to reach 1,000 points in her career.
"Lindsey was voted in as a captain for the second year in a row," McKeown said. "She has shown incredible leadership ability and the willingness to take on any hard issue. She is a great role model for her teammates. Her on court performance speaks for itself as well as what she does in the classroom and in the community. She has earned by her actions and high character the right to be a leader in this program on and off the court."
Sophomore Veronica Burton is in her first year as a captain after an impressive rookie season. She finished first in the Big Ten in steals with 81 and finished second in the Big Ten with a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio. Burton contributed across the board with an average of 8.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, to go along with her shutdown defense.
"Even though Veronica is only a sophomore, she has great respect from her teammates and coaching staff well beyond her years," McKeown said. "Even as a first year, she brought maturity, toughness and discipline on the court and in the classroom. She lets her actions speak volumes and is someone that reflects the high values of Northwestern Women's Basketball."
The Wildcats will play an exhibition against Lewis on Wednesday, November 6 at 7 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Northwestern's home opener is Sunday, November 10 against Loyola Maryland. Tip off for that game is set for 3:30 p.m.
