EVANSTON, Ill. – Matt Moderwell found his fifth goal of the season in the 90th minute to lift Northwestern to a 1-0 victory over the Michigan State Spartans on Friday night.
The first half was evenly matched, with Northwestern coming out strong on defense in the first half. Michigan State fired off four shots, three off-target, and one snatched by Miha Miskovic.
The 'Cats picked up their offensive line in the second half, keeping up a solid defense against the Spartans. The Wildcats fought hard in their attacking zone and their work paid off in the last 5 minutes of the game.
In the 86th minute Jose Del Valle attempted a close range shot, barely blocked by a Spartan defender. A moment later the Wildcats earned a free kick and Matt Moderwell attempted a shot, saved by the Michigan State goalie.
Third time's the charm for the 'Cats, as Moderwell netted the ball amidst pandemonium after a throw-in from the corner. Moderwell rocketed the shot into the top of the net in the 90th minute with the assit from Del Valle, securing the win for the Wildcats.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will travel north for their final Big Ten matchup against Wisconsin on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
