Wildcats Face Nation's Best at October NAC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Northwestern women's fencing wrapped up the October North American Cup on Monday. The 'Cats competed in Division II saber on Friday, Division I foil and epee on Sunday and Division I saber on Monday.
In Division II saber, first-year Hannah Marques was the only one representing Northwestern. Marques went 1-6 in the pools. She made it out of the pools but fell short to Samantha Koo, 15-3, in her first direct elimination. Marques finished the competition 84th overall.
In Division I Foil, sophomore Alyssa Chen and junior Sarah Filby led the squad. Filby went 5-1 in pools and earned herself a bye. She then fenced Kristina Petrova of Ukraine but lost, 15-11, in a close bout. Chen went 3-2 in the pools and earned herself a bye through the first round of direct eliminations. In the round 128, Chen upset Elizabeth Novoseltseva, 15-10, and became the only foilist this weekend to make it to the round of 64. In the round of 64, Chen fell short to Natalie Minarik, 15-13. She closed out the day ranked 54th overall.
In Division I Epee, Emma Scala and Pauline Hamilton excelled. Both fenced successfully through the first round of pools and direct eliminations. In the second round of pools, Scala and Hamilton went 3-3 and 2-4, respectively. Their results qualified them into the next round of direct eliminations. Both fencers fell short at the round of 64. Scala finished the competition ranked 44th, while Hamilton placed 62nd.
In Division I sabre, senior Abby Tartell, juniors Isabella Min and Zhesi Zhuang, sophomore Robyn Song and first-year Hannah Marques took the strip. Song and Tartell made it out of the pools, while the rest of the Wildcats got cut. Song and Tartell both fell short in the round of 128. Tartell led the squad and placed 66th overall.
"This weekend's event gave our team a chance to test their process and skills against some of the strongest fencers in the country," said head coach Zach Moss, "It gives us a great evaluation of where we need to place our focus and what we need to work on moving forward. I'm excited and looking forward to continuing to watch this group grow."
'Cats will be back in action Nov. 2 in Glenview, Ill. at the Fall NU Duals. With the first duals of the season, 'Cats will be officially opening up team competitions.
