EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern went toe-to-toe with second place Michigan but ultimately fell 2-1 in overtime at Martin Stadium on Sunday.
The Wildcats moved to 3-3-1 in Big Ten play (5-7-2 overall). The Wolverines improved to 6-1-1 in conference.
In an even game with plenty of chances, Michigan struck late with a goal off a corner kick in the 88th minute.
Northwestern answered with the dramatic equalizer a minute later after a handball in the box. Junior Mikayla Hampton converted the penalty kick for her second goal of the season and third of her career. She is now the first Wildcat to score multiple goals this season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood made seven saves. First years Lily Gilbertson and Marianna Annest both had dangerous chances with shots on goal for the 'Cats as well as Olivia Stone.
Northwestern is back in action with another two game road trip this week, as it takes on Ohio State on Thursday and Penn State on Sunday. The Wildcats have eight points in the Big Ten standings with four games left to play.
