Wildcats Impress at 42nd Remenyik Open

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern women's fencing closed out the Remenyik Open with a total of eight medals and three top eight finishes.
On the second day of the event, 'Cats competed in junior foil, senior sabre and senior epee.
In junior foil, first-years Anna Biasco and Celia Crompton represented Northwestern. Biasco went 4-2 in pools and won her first direct elimination, 15-3. She cruised through the round of 16 and the quarterfinals but fell short to Xiangxin He in the seminfinals. With her third-place finish, Biasco got her first medal as a Wildcat.
In senior women's sabre, Ilsa Hoffman and Abby Tartell excelled. Tartell went undefeated in pools and earned herself a bye for the first round. She won her next two direct eliminations, 15-3 and 15-8. She fell short in the semifinals and tied for the third place.
Following her bronze medal in the junior sabre event on Saturday, first-year Hoffman brought home a championship in the senior sabre event. She went 3-2 in pools but stepped it up in direct eliminations and fenced her way up the leaderboard. In the finals, Hoffman beat Levi Hoogendoorn, 15-7, and secured the gold medal.
In senior epee, Blodwen Bindas, Emma Scala and Shirley Luong led the squad. Bindas went undefeated in pools and earned herself a bye. She won in the round of 16, 15-10, but fell short in the round of eight. Bindas finished the competition sixth overall.
Sophomore Scala and senior Luong successfully fenced their way up the bracket. Both Scala and Luong fell short in the semi-finals and tied for third place.
The 'Cats will be back in action next week in Kansas City, Mo. at the October North American Cup.
