Fencing Starts 2019-20 on a Strong Note at Remenyik Open

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern women's fencing debuted their 2019-2020 season at the 42nd Remenyik Open on Saturday at Ryan Fieldhouse.
The Remenyik Open, a two-day USA Fencing Regional Open was held on Northwestern's campus for the second season in a row. On Saturday the 'Cats competed in junior sabre, senior foil and junior epee.
The Wildcats had a strong showing in the first day. The first medal of the day came from first-year Ilsa Hoffman in sabre. Hoffman went undefeated in pools and earned a bye in the round of 32. She cruised through round of 16 and round of 8, 15-5 and 15-12, respectively. She fell short in the semi-final and captured the bronze medal at her first tournament as a Wildcat.
In senior women's foil, three Wildcats impressed. Junior Sofia Simontov finished in the top eight. Sophomore Alyssa Chen advanced all the way to the semifinals and finished third after losing to fellow Wildcat Sarah Filby, who went on to win the competition.
Filby went 5-1 in pools and earned herself a bye for the first round of direct eliminations. From the table of 32 to the finals, Filby exclusively fenced fellow 'Cats in Celia Crompton, Justine Banbury, Sophia Simontov and Alyssa Chen. Filby captured the gold after beating Mikaela Yhip, 15-8.
In junior epee, Maggie Snider was the only one representing Northwestern. Snider went undefeated in pools and earned a bye. Following her 15-5 and 15-12 wins in round of 32 and 16, she fell short to Lucy Whittemore and finished the day fifth overall.
The 'Cats will be back in action in tomorrow in Ryan Fieldhouse with junior foil, senior sabre and senior epee competitions.
