EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern took down No. 22 UCF Saturday morning in the first match of ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Combe Tennis Center.
NU needed clutch wins in both of the final two singles matches to finish, where Rheeya Doshi and Julie Byrne came through to give the hosts the victory.
The 'Cats were on the board first after narrowly taking the doubles point. Julie Byrne and Hannah McColgan won at No. 2, 7-5, to ensure the point would be decided at No. 3 after UCF's top duo had won at No. 1. Rheeya Doshi and Caroline Pozo played a tough set against Rebeka Stolmar and Domenika Turkovic, with the NU pair coming out on top by a score of 7-5 and giving the team a 1-0 lead in the match.
UCF took a 2-1 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles before Lee Or was able to restore parity with a victory at No. 3. Or defeated Ksenia Kuznetsova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
After a win for the visitors at No. 4, Northwestern trailed 3-2 with the two remaining matches each going to a third set. With the result on the line, Doshi and Byrne showed they were more than ready for the moment.
Taking on Domenika Turkovic at No. 5, Doshi had dropped the first set before taking the second to force a third. She was dominant in the final frame, racing to a 4-0 lead and finishing off a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory to tie the match at three team points apiece.
At No. 2 singles, Byrne had also lost her first set before coming back to send the match to a final frame. Like Doshi, she cruised to a win in the third, winning all six games to seal a victory for the Wildcats.
The triumph gives Chicago's Big Ten Team a 2-1 mark on the campaign and its first win over ranked competition.
NU will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they face No. 17 Miami at 2 p.m. CT at the Combe Tennis Center. Miami took down No. 23 Tulsa this afternoon to setup a matchup between the two squads.
