Wildcats Douse Flames, 7-0, in Season Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats shut out UIC, 7-0, in their season opener Friday afternoon at Combe Tennis Center.
Northwestern improved to 1-0 after a strong start to the season last weekend at the Miami Invited.
The 'Cats started the match with a strong showing in doubles, keyed by a 6-0 win by Clarissa Hand and Lee Or at No. 1 that moved them to 4-0 on the season.
Julie Byrne and Hannah McColgan improved to 3-1 as a duo with a 6-3 win at No. 2 while Inci Ogut and Rheeya Doshi teamed up for a 6-2 win at No. 3 to boost their record to 3-1.
In singles play, the 'Cats continued to roll, going 6-0. Junior Julie Byrne secured the first Wildcat point of singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. She was followed closely by teammate Caroline Pozo, who coasted to a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Rachel Le Comber of UIC at No. 6 singles.
Northwestern continued their dominance with No. 100 Clarissa Hand making quick work of the UIC's No. 1 Colic singles in two sets (6-1, 6-3).
Lee Or secured the fifth Wildcat point, breezing through her two sets with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles. Another two set victory came from sophomore Inci Ogut, who brought home a point for the Wildcats after defeating Georgie Sanders 6-2, 6-1. Wrapping it up for the Wildcats, Senior Rheeya Doshi secured the final point in a two game match with UIC's Guilin where she won 6-4, 6-2.
Northwestern will be back on the road on Sunday as they take on No. 16 Kansas in a ranked test at noon.
