Northwestern Sweeps Western Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Northwestern women's fencing team continued its remarkable start to the 2018-19 campaign and swept all seven opponents at the Western Invitational on Sunday, improving the team record to 23-1.
Isabella Min (11-0) and Sarah Filby (8-0) finished the meet undefeated, while Sofia Simontov and Robyn Song notched ten wins apiece. This marked the second time this season that Min and Simontov recorded double-digit wins.
"We had a great team performance this weekend, with everyone contributing and getting stronger as the day progressed," said head coach Zach Moss. "We have a few areas to work on, but this was a very solid start to the winter quarter."
All eighteen NU fencers won at least four bouts, and eleven fencers won at least seven. Sixteen fencers recorded at least one 3-0 sweep in the competition. In her 2018-19 debut, junior Abby Tartell went 8-2.
In the opening bout against Brandeis, NU's saber squad recorded the first of three sweeps on the day to pace the 'Cats to a 19-8 victory.
Against UCSD, Filby and Simontov recorded three wins each, while Maddy Curzon and Emine Yücel contributed two wins each in the 16-11 NU victory.
Filby, Curzon, and Amy Jia continued their strong performances with sweeps in round three, allowing the Wildcats to defeat host Air Force, 18-9.
In round four against Incarnate Word, the #B1GCats collected key victories from Sharon Chen and Alexandra Banin en route to a tight 16-11 win.
Against Stanford, 3-0 sweeps from Pauline Hamilton, Jia, and Curzon led Northwestern to a 20-7 victory.
Seven Wildcats recorded 3-0 sweeps in the 25-2 win over Cal Tech, including those by Doreen Du, Natalie Kim, and Ashley Gomerman.
Northwestern secured the sweep of the Western Invitational with a convincing 25-2 victory over Florida, which included 3-0 efforts from Marta Amador Molina, Shirley Luong, and Justine Banbury.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will return to action in the Philadelphia Invitational next Sunday, January 20th.
