Rivera, Morland Claim Victories Against Top-Ranked Penn State

EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 1 Sebastian Rivera continued his unbeaten campaign Friday night, defeating Penn State's Devin Schnupp by technical fall in the first period. Rivera wasted no time jumping out in front of Schnupp and continued to dominate the Nittany Lion, only allowing two escapes before logging the technical fall, 18-2, with six seconds left in the first period.
Rivera improves to 15-0 in his redshirt sophomore season and will maintain the top ranking in the 125-pound class following his victory. The New Jersey native has won eight of his last nine bouts by bonus points.
Redshirt first-year Tyler Morland recorded his first career victory with an exciting 11-9 decision over Bo Pipher at 165. Morland took control of the bout with five points in the second period and held off an aggressive Pipher in the third to come away with three team points for the hosts.
The Wildcats dropped the dual, 33-8, to the Nittany Lions.
Rivera's strong performance helped Northwestern put up the most points of any team against Penn State this season. The Wildcats' eight points were the most given up by the Nittany Lions in a dual match since giving up 13 on February 10, 2018 against Iowa. Chicago's Big Ten Team also held Penn State to its fewest points scored this season with 33.
The Wildcats wrestled in front of 1,810 fans, the second-most at home in the last five years, and the most at the New Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats are back in action in a week as they travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to face the Badgers on January 18th. The match will begin at 7 p.m. CT.
