Dear Northwestern,
Â
It's been four years since I left my sunny and familiar California home to embark on a journey of chilly "first's" and uncomfortable "never would I have ever's" in Evanston.
Â
I look back on it all and wouldn't change a thing. You have become my home. One that I identified as my own, one where I grew to know myself better, and one in which I constantly am reminded of how blessed I am to be surrounded by my family here.
Â
When I arrived in Evanston, I was a shy 18-year-old who didn't know anyone—fast forward 4 years later and I have gained so many friendships that will last a lifetime. You provided me with peers, mentors, and coaches who believed in me, guided me and challenged me to think deeper, to care wider and to dream bigger.
Â
I will admit my journey here hasn't been always easy though. There were moments when I doubted my capability and even times when I cried, but they were all growing pains that helped me learn more about myself. It comes as no surprise that I leave this place with a big smile, yet also a heavy heart because of how much you mean to me.
Â
Thank you for creating a space for a Californian girl like me to feel warm and welcomed and to embrace the winters (both literally and figuratively). As I prepare for my journey, I will remember how you taught me to keep persevering in the tough times, to listen to people's stories and to use my gifts to help others.
Â
Thank you for making me a better person, Northwestern. You'll always be my home.
Â
Sincerely,
Â
