No. 15 'Cats Tame Lions in Home Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 15 Northwestern extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to six games on Thursday night with a 1-0 win over Loyola Marymount in the home opener at Martin Stadium.
Senior Brenna Lovera scored the winner for the Wildcats in the second half, becoming the first repeat scorer of the season. First year Julietta Thron was credited with the assist with a shot off the crossbar that fell to the senior.
The 'Cats posted their fifth straight shutout and have only conceded one goal this season, which came in the opener. The team's shutout streak now stands at 521:47, the fourth-longest streak in program history. The 'Cats surpassed the previous fourth-best mark set by Wendi Scholz in 1997, and they will now try to best the top three streaks, all set in the last two years by Lauren Clem.
First year goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood made three saves for her clean sheet. She now is tied for the most shutouts in the country among all goalkeepers, and holds an imperious goals-against average of 0.164.
The six-game unbeaten streak is the third longest in program-history to start the season, behind 2016 and 1998, which were nine and ten games, respectively.
First year Haley Lawson made her first career start for the 'Cats in her fifth collegiate appearance. Thron registered the first point by a rookie this season and also became the 12th Wildcat in six games to record a point.
Lovera leads all active Wildcats with 13 career goals and is now four back of cracking the top-ten all-time in program history.
Northwestern started the game at a blistering pace, coming close to scoring three times in the opening minutes. Sophomore Kayleigh Stahlschmidt had a shot blocked at close range before Lovera raced in behind only to fire wide. A ball popped to Steigleder at the top of the box, but the sophomore drilled her effort just inches wide of the left post.
The 'Cats threatened again in the 22nd minute with a corner kick from Viggiano. Senior Kayla Sharples rose to meet the ball but directed her header towards the Lions' goalkeeper.
Northwestern had three straight corners to open the second half and finally broke the deadlock on the ultimate one. Viggiano's initial delivery careened out to the top of the box, and it deflected to Thron 30 yards out. The first year blasted a shot from distance that beat the keeper, but it clattered off the crossbar. With expert timing, Lovera pounced on the rebound at close range and gave the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
The #B1GCats closed out the rest of the game and maintained their perfect record in one-goal games and in games they score first.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when it welcomes Bowling Green to Martin Stadium. The match will be streamed on BTN+.
