No. 9 Wildcats Outlast Kent State

KENT, Ohio – No. 9 Northwestern pulled away from Kent State for a 4-2 win Tuesday afternoon to cap off a three-game road trip.

The Wildcats moved up three spots in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches poll to No. 9, as announced today. The win improves the Wildcats to 3-2 and gives the team its first winning streak of 2018.

Puck Pentenga scored a goal and assisted another for the 'Cats, giving her a team-high 12 points on the season. The game was Pentenga's third of the season where she recorded multiple assists or goals.

First year Maren Seidel logged her first career goal as a Wildcat in her fifth career start. Sophomore Lakin Barry and junior Saar de Breij added the two other goals for the Wildcats.

Senior Eva van Agt, junior Kirsten Mansfield and first year Kayla Blas each recorded an assist on the afternoon. Mansfield leads the team with five assists while Blas and van Agt now have three apiece.

The 'Cats split halves with their two keepers with junior Annie Kalfas getting the start and sophomore Florien Marcussen keeping a clean sheet in the second period to earn the win. It was the first scoreless half Marcussen has posted in her career and her first career win.

Northwestern won its seventh straight game against Kent State under head coach Tracey Fuchs and improved to 10-4 all time against the Golden Flashes. De Breij and Pentenga scored against Kent State for the second year in a row.

The Golden Flashes struck first just five minutes into the game on a penalty corner to make it 1-0.

NU responded five minutes later when it earned its first penalty corner of the match. Mansfield passed to Blas who teed up Pentenga. The senior finished the patented play off for the Wildcats for her fourth goal of the season to make it 1-1.

In a wild opening to the match, Kent State grabbed the lead once more just three minutes later on another penalty corner.

After a timeout, Northwestern regrouped and eventually found an answer again in the 27th minute on a solo effort by de Breij. The junior tallied her second goal of the season to tie things up at 2-2.

The #B1GCats came out of halftime with a renewed energy and took the game over. Lakin Barry found a loose ball on a penalty corner and buried it past the keeper for her first goal this season to make it 3-2 in the 40th minute.

The Wildcats finished off their second-half flurry with another penalty corner five minutes later. Pentenga's shot was deflected by Seidel past the Flashes' keeper and the Wildcats seized a commanding 4-2 lead.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action this weekend on Friday and Sunday when it returns to Evanston to welcome Miami of Ohio and No. 24 Boston University, respecitvely, to Lakeside Field. Both matches start at noon.
