Wildcats Extinguish Flames in Three Sets at Chicago Cup

CHICAGO, Ill. — Northwestern volleyball (8-2, 0-0 Big Ten) commanded the opener of the Chicago Cup on Friday afternoon with a three-set sweep over UIC.
 
The 'Cats will play DePaul (10 a.m.) and Loyola-Chicago (7 p.m.) on Saturday for the conclusion of the Chicago Cup.
 
NORTHWESTERN 3, UIC 0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18)
 
TEAM NOTES:
  • Northwestern improved to 27-4 all-time against UIC … The Wildcats extended their winning streak over the Flames to 12-straight matches … NU has not dropped a set to UIC since September 11, 2004, a streak that comprises seven-straight matches.
  • The Wildcats limited UIC to an .082 hitting percentage … No Flames player had double-digit kills.
  • The contest was the first for head coach Shane Davis at Loyola's Gentile Arena since joining the Wildcats … Davis was a two-time national champion head coach on the men's side for the Ramblers after an accomplished playing career for Loyola.
 
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
  • Nia Robinson paced the Wildcats with 14 kills and tied her season high with seven digs … Ella Grbac led the 'Cats with a .300 hitting percentage.
  • Michelle Lee led Northwestern with 17 digs … Lexi Pitsas also had a double-digit effort, amassing a season-high 11 saves.
  • Britt Bommer was the team leader with a career-high 35 assists.
  • Hanna Lesiak tied her career high with two blocks.
 
MATCH NOTES:
  • S1 | Ella Grbac paced the Wildcats by notching five kills on six attempts … Northwestern hit .429 as a unit and limited UIC to a .200 clip in the match-opener … The 'Cats won by a 25-20 score, going on a late, four-unanswered point streak.
  • S2 | The Wildcats limited the Flames to a -.027 hitting percentage and won the second set, 25-20 … Nia Robinson led the Wildcats with four kills in the set.
  • S3 | The 'Cats again outhit the Flames, .222 to .097, and won their third set, 25-18, the largest win of the match.
