EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern's Camden Buescher, Tommy Katsiyiannis and Garrett Opperman earned Big Ten Preseason Honors, the conference announced Wednesday.
Buescher enters his senior campaign having seen action in 54 career games with 51 career starts. The Toledo, Ohio, native started all 19 matches last season and finished with a team-best four assists. He scored a pair of game-winning goals in 2017 to help NU top Western Illinois and DePaul.
Katsiyiannis busted onto the scene in 2017 by tallying a team-best seven goals and 15 points, all of which came in Northwestern's final seven games. His tally of seven goals ranks second among returning Big Ten goal scorers and is the most by an NU rookie since 2012. The Eden Prairie, Minnesota, native recorded three game-winning goals and was named to the Big Ten's All-Freshmen Team.
Opperman was a unanimous selection to the Big Ten's All-Freshmen Team in 2017. As a first year, he played every minute of the campaign on NU's defensive line, finishing with a team-best 1736 minutes played. The #B1GCats' center back helped the team tally seven victories on the season, including three shutout wins and was named to College Soccer News' All-Freshman Third Team.
The Wildcats will square off with Rider on Friday, Aug. 17, in an exhibition match, before opening the regular season on Aug. 24 against Cleveland State at Martin Stadium.
