Wildcats Wrap Up Sensational Academic Year With Record GPA

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern student-athletes wrapped up a remarkable season in the classroom with a 3.36 grade point average (GPA) during the spring quarter, to put the finishing touch on a record 3.33 average GPA for the 2017-18 academic year. Across the group of more than 500 young men and women representing 19 varsity programs, 81 percent earned a 3.0 or higher, and 52 posted perfect 4.0 GPAs.
"The entire Northwestern community is extremely proud of how our student-athletes represent the University academically, socially and athletically," said Combe Family Vice President for Athletic & Recreation Jim Phillips. "The results earned in the classroom are a testament to the commitment to excellence demonstrated by our student-athletes, their coaches and our academic support staff."
For the eighth-consecutive year, Northwestern earned 200-plus Academic All-Big Ten awards, with a total of 227 student-athletes receiving the recognition, a figure representing nearly 75-percent of eligible Wildcats. The group includes 81 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, including conference-leading totals for Northwestern football, men's basketball, women's basketball, lacrosse and fencing.
Led by 11 teams with perfect scores, a total of 12 varsity athletic programs earned the nation's top Academic Progress Rate (APR), the NCAA announced in May. Wildcats football earned a 997 score, the top mark in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Northwestern football program has ranked first or second in FBS APR in eight consecutive years.
Northwestern scored a 97 percent overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the latest data released by the NCAA during the fall, a figure which leads the Big Ten by five points. The Wildcats have scored 96 percent or higher overall in each of the 13 years GSR data has been released, finishing in the Top-4 among FBS athletic departments in every year.
