EVANSTON, Ill. — Seven-time NCAA champion Northwestern has earned an at-large bid and will play Richmond on Friday, May 11, in the first round of 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Tournament following a 13-5 regular season.
The Wildcats will travel to Towson University to take on the Spiders. The winner will advance to the second round where they will play the winner of No. 7-seed Towson and Wagner/Mercer. A play-in game between Wagner and Mercer will be played on Wednesday to determine the fourth team in the Towson region.
Friday's contest between Northwestern and Richmond will begin at approximately 5 p.m. CT. The second round game at Towson on Sunday will begin at 11 a.m. CT
Richmond earned an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament by defeating UMASS in overtime of the Atlantic 10 championship game Sunday afternoon. The Spiders enter the tournament 16-3 overall and are led by A-10 Coach of the Year Allison Kwolek, A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Kim Egizi and A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Julie Ball.
The Wildcats and Spiders have met eight times previously, but just once since the 'Cats' program returned in 2002. The two teams have split the eight meetings.
This year marks the 20th all-time berth in the NCAA Tournament for the seven-time national champion Wildcats, and the 15th in Kelly Amonte Hiller's storied 17-year career as head coach of the 'Cats. Amonte Hiller is 40-7 in her career in the NCAA Tournament and this season is setting her sights on guiding Northwestern to an 12th appearance in the national semifinals and eighth national championship.
