'Cats Take Series over Iowa, Drop Finale

Iowa's six unanswered runs following a 3-2 Wildcat lead set the tone, but the Wildcats did not go down without a fight.
The Hawkeyes managed to get on the scoreboard first in the top of the second. A leadoff walk and a throwing error resulted in consequences, as the Hawkeyes strung together a stolen base and a couple singles to plate two.
However, Northwestern's fate changed in the third. After Casey O'Laughlin reached on a throwing error and was moved over via a Jack Dunn sac bunt, Alex Erro sent one down the left field line to score the runner and move to second. Jack Claeys walked to set Willie Bourbon up with a two on, two out situation. Bourbon came up clutch with a single to right, and an additional throwing error helped the 'Cats plate two more to take a 3-2 lead.
Iowa answered in its half of the fourth. A series of small-ball style approaches succeeded in scoring a couple to take the lead, 4-3.
Iowa added another in the top of the sixth after a pair of singles and a sacrifice grounder.
The Hawkeyes extended their lead to 8-3 in the top of the seventh on a string of hits, including a leadoff home run.
The Wildcats would not go silently, though, as they made a dent in the lead in their half of the seventh. O'Laughlin reached on an infield single, followed up by a single through the left by Dunn. Later on, Claeys added his own single to left to score O'Laughlin, making it 8-4.
Iowa put their foot down in the eighth. A one-out, two-run home run stretched the lead to 10-4. Iowa's two home runs on the day made a major impact as Northwestern was not able to match Iowa's power until the final frame.
Northwestern showed fight in the bottom of the ninth when Claeys came to bat with two on and two out. Claeys sent a bomb over the right field wall to shorten the lead to 10-7. The home run was Claeys' eighth on the season, leading the team.
The Wildcats are in action again Tuesday at home versus Notre Dame. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. CT.
