Northwestern Splits Season Series with Notre Dame

5/15/2018 7:17:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern dropped a home contest against Notre Dame Tuesday afternoon in the second meeting of the campaign between the two programs.

The game was a much higher-scoring affair than the first matchup, which was won by the Wildcats, 2-0. The Irish scored 19 runs on the back of five RBI's each from Nick Podkul, Eric Gilgenbach and Alex Kerschner.

Jack Dunn and Jack Claeys each provided offensive sparks for Chicago's Big Ten Team. Claeys notched two hits, including his eighth double of the season, while Dunn plated three teammates with a triple in the seventh inning.

Willlie Bourbon and Alex Erro also both notched multi-hit games. It was the 15th such achievement for Erro on the campaign, and 10th mutli-hit performance for Bourbon, who went 3-4 with a home run on the afternoon.

Anthony Alepra got the start for NU and went a career-high five innings while giving up just three runs. The first year recorded 10 flyouts and added a strikeout in his eighth appearance of the year.

The hosts tallied a pair of hits in the bottom of the first frame on singles from Alex Erro and Willie Bourbon, but failed to plate either as the inning ended with zeros on the scoreboard.

The contest stayed scoreless until the top of the third, when the Irish scored twice on two hits to take a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Notre Dame looked poised to add to its lead when Gilgenbach rounded third and headed home on a hit from Daniel Jung. In right field, Casey O'Laughlin snagged the ball and gunned it home, where Jack Claeys caught and held the ball through a hard collision with the runner to record the out and end the inning.

After a scoreless fifth, the visitors added three more in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to five runs. Four hits did the damage for the Irish before relief pitcher Danny Katz was able to end the frame with a strikeout.

The seventh inning saw a combined 11 runners reach home between the two teams. A pair of homers helped Notre Dame add six in the first half of the frame before Northwestern got on the board in the bottom.

Willie Bourbon got the hot stretch underway with a leadoff double. The 'Cats would go on to load the bases before Leo Kaplan scored Bourbon with a sacrifice fly. After O'Laughlin was hit by a pitch, Dunn cleared the bases with a rip over the head of the right fielder to increase the tally to four on the inning. It was the first game with three or more RBI's for the leadoff man since he hit a grand slam against Michigan in April of 2016. NU added another when Alex Erro sent Dunn home to give the hosts five runs on the afternoon.

Both teams stayed hot into the eighth, where the Irish added three before NU recorded another pair. The score stood 14-7 going into the final frame and eventually finished 19-10 after a two-run shot from Jack Kelly and solo homer for Bourbon in the bottom of the ninth.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action on Thursday, May 17 for the first of its season-ending three-game series with Belmont. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Rocky and Bernice Miller Park.
