'Cats Advance Past Richmond, 24-18, in Historic Performance

5/11/2018 8:41:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

TOWSON, Md. – Northwestern advanced past Richmond, 24-18, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night in a historic performance fueled by junior Selena Lasota, who set the NCAA Tournament single-game record with nine goals.

The Wildcats will play No. 7 seed Towson on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Northwestern scored the most goals in program history in an NCAA Tournament game with 24, breaking the previous record of 23 set against UMass in 2009. The 24 goals scored is tied for the fourth highest total in program history, along with efforts against Denver on Jan. 23, 2009 and Georgetown on Mar. 5, 2011.

The combined total of 42 goals was also the highest ever in an NCAA Tournament game, breaking the previous record of 41 set earlier on Friday between Colorado and Jacksonville.

Selena Lasota turned in one of the greatest Wildcat performances ever with nine goals and two assists. Her nine goals were the most ever in an NCAA Tournament game and the most in any game in her career. She also tied the program record of nine goals, accomplished by Antoinette Lucas against Dartmouth in 1989 and by Kathleen Kochmansky against Ball State in 1984 and Dartmouth in 1982. Lasota's 11 points were the third most in a single game in program history.

Senior Sheila Nesselbush had a record-setting outing as well, registering six goals and one assist for a career-high in goals and points.

Sophomore Megan Kinna, senior Danita Stroup and junior Claire Quinn chipped in two goals each in the offensive explosion. Senior Shelby Fredericks had a goal and two assists along with six draw controls to lead the 'Cats.

Redshirt first year Julie Krupnick got the start for NU in goal and made seven saves in the win.

Northwestern opened the game on a tear, with Kinna scoring 38 seconds in and Lasota adding her first within the first minute. Lasota diced through the Spider defense for her second to give the 'Cats a 3-0 lead. After one from Richmond, Lasota put in the fourth to finish a hat trick in the first 3:27 of the game.

Richmond cut the lead to 4-3 to set the non-stop pace early, but Northwestern responded with goals from Nesselbush, Stroup and Fredericks to push the lead back out to 7-3 with 23:50 still to go in the first half.

The Spiders used a three-goal run of their own and then traded goals with Nesselbush and senior Nicole Beardsley to make it 9-8 in favor of the Wildcats.

Northwestern then held Richmond scoreless for the rest of the half and went on a 6-0 run to blow the game open. Lasota went into halftime with six goals and Nesselbush also had an impressive four while the 'Cats led 15-8.

The Spiders came out of the locker room and clawed back with a 6-2 run to make it 17-14 within the first eight minutes of the second half. Lasota and Nesselbush scored their seventh and fifth, respectively, to restore the lead to 19-14.

After one more Richmond goal, Lasota put her final stamp on the game with her eighth goal, while the 'Cats were a player down, and then her ninth on a free position shot. Kinna added her second less than a minute later to effectively kill the game off at 22-15.

Quinn and Lindsey McKone added the last two goals for the Wildcats as the game finally slowed down in the closing stages.

The No. 9 Wildcats moved to 14-5 and will put their season on the line against the 16-4 Towson Tigers on Sunday at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
