Northwestern Drops Doubleheader to Michigan

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern could not match Michigan's offense as they dropped the second game of their afternoon doubleheader at Miller Park, 3-0.
Northwestern drops to 8-16 overall and 1-7 in Big Ten play, while Michigan improved to 18-11 on the season and 5-0 in conference action.
Sophomore Hank Christie had a solid outing, going six innings and only allowing one earned run. He also added three strikeouts, marking the fourth time this season that he has fanned at least three batters.
Michigan struck first in the third inning via a leadoff double followed by a sacrifice bunt and single.
Chaos ensued in Michigan's half of the fifth, beginning with Michigan putting runners on second and third. The Wolverines sacrifice bunted and plated two on an interference call.
Ryan Bader took over for Christie to begin the seventh and held Michigan scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings. The Wildcats managed to escape the eighth on a backdoor pickoff to third from catcher Nick Paciorek.
Bader was replaced by JR Reimer with one out in the ninth. Bader pitched 2.1 innings, while allowing four hits and no runs. This is the third time this season that Bader has held the opposition scoreless in relief.
Game 1
Northwestern fell in the first game of the doubleheader versus Michigan, 6-0. The Wildcats' offense was led by a 2-for-3 game from Leo Kaplan. Ben Dickey also added two walks for the 'Cats.
Quinn Lavelle gave up four earned in five innings of work, with all four coming in the fifth inning.
Josh Levy entered in the sixth inning and gave up two earned runs in three innings of work, and the Wildcats were not able to make up the deficit.
It was the first time this season that the #B1GCats dropped a conference game by more than two runs.
