EVANSTON, Ill. -- Three Northwestern fencers competed at World Cup matches this weekend, headlined by rookie Alexis Browne emerging victorious from a pool of 28 fencers in Reykjavik, Iceland. Junior Yvonne Chart and rookie Sarah Filby also competed in Tauberbischofsheim, Germany.

The competition in Iceland consisted of two rounds of pool action followed by a single elimination bracket. Browne began as the 10th overall seed and finished the first round of pool play 2-4, which dropped her to the 21-seed. In the proceeding round of pool play, Browne flipped her outcome, going 4-2, which earned her the 10-seed for tournament competition.

The New City, New York native was first matched up with 23-seed Nicole Miranda from Chile, who she defeated 15-7. In the following round, she defeated seven-seed Pamela Brind'amour from Canada, 15-13, to set her up with a matchup against the two-seed Brigitta Pentek from Hungary. Browne was victorious again, this time winning 15-10. In the semifinal round, she faced off against the six-seed Marissa Ponich from Canada. It was close again, but Browne defeated Ponich, 15-13, to advance to the final.

The championship round saw Browne duel against another underdog, this time the eight-seed of the tournament, Bhavani Devi Chadalavada Anandha Sundhararaman from India, who had already upset the top seed. Browne continued her dominant performance by handling her opponent, 15-10, to win the World Cup.

Chart and Filby were part of a field of over 180 fencers from across the world. The tournament began with pool play, where each fencer was matched up with six others, dueling each other once. Filby was victorious in two bouts, while Chart won one.

Filby qualified for the direct elimination portion of the tournament, where she was defeated in the first round by 31-seed Viktoria Mesteri from Hungary.

This marks each fencer's second tournament outside the country in April. To begin the month, Filby represented her home country of Canada at the Junior World Championships where she went undefeated in pool play and helped lead Canada to a ninth place finish. During the weekend of April 14-15, Chart competed at the British National Championships, where she went 8-1 and finished fifth overall.
