MINNEAPOLIS ---  Top-seeded Northwestern marched on to the semifinal round of the Big Ten tournament Friday afternoon by capturing a 4-0 win over ninth-seeded Maryland.

With the win, the Wildcats advance to take on fourth-seeded Ohio State at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Buckeyes earned a 4-1 win over fifth-seeded Purdue earlier in the day.

NU defeated the Buckeyes this past Sunday, 4-2, in Columbus in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Friday's matchup started out outdoors and Maryland gave Northwestern all it could handle in doubles action. After narrowly missing out in an upset at No. 1 in the regular-season matchup between the schools, the Terrapins team of Millie Stretton and Eva Alexandrova was able to take down NU's fourth-ranked duo of Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp, 6-3. However, Julie Byrne and Rheeya Doshi were able secure a 6-4 win at No. 3, leaving the doubles point to be decided by the match at No. 2.

Alex Chatt and Lee Or were knotted, 4-4, with Ekaterina Tour and Arnelle Sullivan but the Wildcats were able to break serve and then hold to earn a 6-4 win and put Northwestern up 1-0 in the match.

Windy conditions forced a break prior to the start of singles play as the teams headed indoors.

The Terrapins continued to battle the Wildcats in singles play. Northwestern did manage to push its lead to 3-0 by getting a pair of wins in straight sets.

Playing in her first singles match in over two months, Doshi was dominant as she took down Saya Usui 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6. Her doubles partner, Byrne, was able to continue her singles success as she took down Zoe Kulkarni, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 4.

However, each of the remaining four matches were forced into a third set, leaving the Terrapins with a glimmer of hope.

Northwestern was able to close things out, though. Chatt and Lipp both dominated their third sets and Lipp won the race to the finish as she was able to close out Alexandrova 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 to earn the clincher.
