Wildcats Topple Ohio State to Reach Big Ten Tourney Title Match

MINNEAPOLIS --- Top-seeded Northwestern punched its ticket to the Big Ten tournament championship game by handling Ohio State, 4-1, Saturday at Baseline Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (21-4) will face the winner of Saturday's second match between second-seeded Michigan and third-seeded Illinois.
NU is seeking its first Big Ten tournament title since 2014 and its 18 conference tournament crown overall.
Six days after defeating the Buckeyes, 4-2, in the regular-season finale between the teams in Columbus, Northwestern surged in front thanks to a strong performance in doubles play.
The No. 3 team of Julie Byrne and Rheeya Doshi completely dominated Danielle Wolf and Emma DeCoste, blanking the Buckeyes, 6-0. At No. 1, the fourth-seeded team of Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp shook off a slow start to win the final four games in posting a 6-3 victory over the 33rd-ranked duo of Anna Sanford and Shiori Fukuda.
Northwestern carried the momentum into singles play where it captured the first set in five of the six matches. Byrne continued her stellar play as she only dropped one game in rolling past DeCoste 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
Doshi pushed the Wildcats' lead to 3-0 when she was able to finish off a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mary Beth Hurley at No. 6.
The Buckeyes managed to get on the board thanks to a three-set win by Olivia Sneed at No. 3, but moments later, Alex Chatt completed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Wolf at No. 5, securing Northwestern spot in Sunday's title match.
