EVANSTON, Ill. – Hannah Kim has been recognized with the fourth First Team All-Big Ten honor of her decorated career, the first four-time First Team honoree in Northwestern history, the Conference announced Tuesday. The senior was joined on the First Team by Wildcats junior Janet Mao, while teammates Sarah Cho and Stephanie Lau earned Second Team laurels.
Kim, a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year and two-time Mary Fossum Award winner (lowest stroke average to par), is just the 12th four-time First Team All-Conference honoree in Big Ten women's golf. Among her extensive list of collegiate accomplishments, Kim owns the best career scoring mark in Northwestern history, as well as the program's 18-hole and 54-hole records. The Chula Vista, California, native is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree in her first two years of eligibility.
This year's recognition was the first First Team nod for Mao, who picked up Second Team honors after each of her first two collegiate seasons. The Johns Creek, Georgia, native was Northwestern's top finisher at last weekend's Big Ten Championships, riding a remarkable Sunday 66 (the second-lowest round in program history) to a T4 result. The junior neuroscience major was honored as a WGCA All-American scholar each of the last two years.
Cho and Lau each picked up the third All-Conference recognition of their careers. Cho, a senior, received First Team honors as a sophomore and Second Team last season as a junior. She boasts the No. 5 career stroke average in Wildcats program history and two of the Top-7 individual scoring seasons. Lau, a junior, was a First Team honoree in each of her first two seasons. She has the No. 2 single-season and career scoring marks in the Northwestern record book.
A native of San Diego, California, Cho also was selected as Northwestern's 2018 Sportsmanship Award recipient. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
No. 11 Northwestern awaits its 2018 NCAA Regional destination, which will be announced Wednesday. The NCAA Selection Show, live on Golf Channel beginning at 4:30 p.m. CT, will announce whether the 'Cats are headed to Madison, Stanford, Tallahassee or Austin the following weekend.
Head coach Emily Fletcher and the Wildcats have posted the program's best-ever finish at the NCAA Championships in each of the last four seasons, culminating in a stroke play title, No. 1 match play seed, and runner-up finish last spring in front of a raucous Chicagoland crowd at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
