Six Wildcats Set for 2018 U.S. Open Wrestling Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. — Five Northwestern wrestlers and one Wildcat coach will be wrestling in Las Vegas this week at the 2018 Marine Corps U.S. Open. The event will run from April 26 to April 28 at the South Point Arena.
Student-athletes Ryan Deakin (70 kg), Micah Krueger (61 kg), Shayne Oster (70 kg), Yahya Thomas (65 kg), and Colin Valdiviez (61 kg) will be competing in the event, while volunteer assistant coach Cody Brewer (61 kg) will also be participating.
Deakin and Brewer will be wrestling in the senior men's freestyle event, while Krueger, Oster, Thomas, and Valdiviez will be entered into the UWW Junior Freestyle bracket.
Competition begins Friday at 11 a.m. CT, while semifinals and medal rounds begin Saturday at 11 a.m. The finals begin Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
The top seven finishers in the Senior Freestyle bracket qualify for the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, May 18-20 in Rochester, Minnesota. Brewer is pre-seeded at fifth at 61 kg, while Deakin is pre-seeded ninth at 70 kg.
In the UWW Junior Freestyle event, the top eight finishers in each weight class earn a berth to the 2018 UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials in Rochester, Minnesota, on May 18-19. The Junior World Championships are August 17-23 in Trvava, Slovakia.
