Lavelle Goes the Distance, Northwestern Blanks Maryland

3/30/2018 8:48:00 PM | Baseball

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — First year Quinn Lavelle delivered Northwestern its first Big Ten win of the season by throwing a complete-game shutout to lead the Wildcats by Maryland, 4-0, Friday night.

Northwestern (8-12, 1-3 B1G) leaned on its rookie pitcher all night. The complete game was a career-long outing for Lavelle and his eight strikeouts were the most he has had in a game this season. He had one walk in the 30 batters he faced.

Maryland (12-14, 0-1 B1G) only managed to rack up four hits on the night off of Lavelle. AJ Lee led the way for the Terrapins with a 2-for-3 performance. Taylor Bloom earned the start for the Terps and went 8.0 innings and worked six scoreless frames after allowing three runs in the second inning. He finished with four strikeouts and four walks.

The Wildcats out hit Maryland, 7-4. Jack Claeys was the lone Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Alex Erro, Willie Bourbon, Ben Dickey and Kyle Burnett Jr., each drove in a run on the night.

Claeys also threw out a pair of runners trying to steal.

The difference came down to the second inning Friday night. Charlie Maxwell walked to begin the frame and Connor Lind singled through the right side to put runners on the corners for Dickey, who dropped a perfect safety squeeze to score Maxwell and give NU a 1-0 lead.

After a wild pitch moved runners to second and third, Burnett Jr. had a sacrifice fly to right field to score Lind and then Erro singled through the right side two batters later to put Northwestern in front, 3-0.

Both teams played scoreless baseball until the ninth inning when Bourbon dropped a double down the left field line to score Burnett Jr., but Erro was thrown out at home to end the frame.

Lavelle closed the door in the bottom of the ninth to give Northwestern its fourth win over Maryland in the last six meetings and third consecutive win at Bob Turtle Smith Stadium.

Game two of the series will take place tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT.
