Northwestern Edged by No. 24 Illinois in Extra Innings

3/25/2018 4:38:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern dropped the series finale to Illinois, 4-2, in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon.

Northwestern was led by a strong outing from first year Jack Pagliarini, who allowed five hits and no earned runs in six innings. The lefty also recorded seven strikeouts, one short of tying his career-high.

Sophomore second baseman Alex Erro led the #B1GCats from the plate going 1-for-2 with his first home run of the year and three walks.

Illinois struck first in the top of the third scoring on a wild pitch.

Chicago's Big Ten Team evened the score in the bottom of the fourth via a home run to right from Erro. The sophomore second baseman not only tied the game, but he continued his hitting streak which now sits at ten games.

The 'Cats threatened in the bottom half with one-out walks from Jack Claeys and Charlie Maxwell. Ben Dickey moved them over on a chopper to second, and Kyle Burnett, Jr., lined out to center to end the inning.

Tommy Bordignon took over for Ryan Bader in the eighth. Bader left the game after allowing only one hit in 1.2 innings of work. Bordignon got off to a shaky start that included two consecutive wild pitches, but the veteran managed to get out of the inning with a big strikeout.

Northwestern then took the lead in its half of the eighth. Leo Kaplan recorded his second hit of the game with a leadoff double. Connor Lind reached on a bunt that moved Kaplan over, and Jack Dunn brought the runner home on a successful squeeze bunt. Illinois then managed to escape from a bases-loaded jam to hold the 'Cats to just one.

Illinois tied the game in its half of the ninth on a sacrifice fly and close play at the plate. Northwestern couldn't manage to plate a runner in its half, and the game headed to extras.

Illinois went ahead with a two-run home run in the top of the 10th and the Wildcats were unable to match them in their half.

The 'Cats are back in action on Tuesday, March 27, at Chicago State with first pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT.
