EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 14 Northwestern opens up its Big Ten season this weekend as it travels to fifth-ranked Illinois Friday before hosting Iowa Sunday at Combe Tennis Center. Friday's match gets underway at 2 p.m. while Sunday's begins at 11 a.m.
The Wildcats (6-3) are coming off an impressive 4-2 home win over then-No. 7 Vanderbilt last Friday. NU took the doubles point before getting singles wins from Alex Chatt, Julie Byrne and Erin Larner.
Northwestern's dominant doubles group is paced by Larner and Maddie Lipp who boast a No. 2 national ranking. Meanwhile, Chatt and Lee Or are ranked No. 13. Additionally, Or and Larner are No. 28 when paired with one another.
In singles, Lipp leads the way with a No. 65 ranking while Larner is No. 85 and Or is No. 88.
Illinois (10-1) has vaulted it its highest national ranking in school history thanks to a trio of ranked victories already this season over Texas, Washington and Wake Forest. The Fighting Illini is led by junior Jaclyn Switkes who has a No. 79 national ranking in singles.
Northwestern won last year's meeting, 6-1, Feb. 19 in Evanston and has a 50-7 all-time record against Illinois, including winning the last 17 meetings between the schools.
Iowa takes a 6-3 record into its match at Notre Dame Saturday. The Hawkeyes most recently posted a 7-0 win over Marquette and a 6-0 victory over Bradley last Sunday. Iowa dropped its Big Ten opener to Illinois, 6-1, last Saturday.
Northwestern owns a 41-2 all-time record against Iowa.
