Kim started her day with a birdie on the 384-yard, Par-4 No. 10, and then bogeyed No. 12 to fall back to even par. From there she rattled off nine consecutive birdies before carding three birdies over her final six holes to finish the day with a 3-under 68, the second time this year and the 11th in her career that Kim has finished a round at 68-or-better.
Lau started slow on Friday with a bogey on No. 10 to open the round, and another on No. 14 to find herself at 2-over after just five holes. But that would be her last mistake of the day. She birdied Nos. 17 and 18 to make the turn at even par, and then posted two more birdies on the front nine to record a 2-under 69 and finish the day in a tie for fourth-place.
Sophomore Brooke Riley carded three birdies during a 1-over 72 opening round that places her in the Top-15 after 18 holes.
As a result of their superb performance on Friday, the Wildcats will tee off Saturday's second round in the final groups off No. 1, paired with Alabama and Arkansas. Janet Mao will get things started for Northwestern at 10:10 a.m. ET, followed by groups including Sarah Cho, Riley, Lau and Kim, in ten-minute increments.
