Northwestern Spring Schedule Highlighted by Chicago Cup

SCHEDULE UPDATE: Northwestern game against Lewis on Tuesday, April 24, has been canceled.
EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern men's soccer team is in the midst of its spring schedule, which is highlighted by the Chicago Cup final at Martin Stadium on April 21.
The Wildcats look to use the spring schedule to prepare for the 2018 season, in which the team returns 96.0 percent of last year's scoring offense. The spring season also offers an opportunity to integrate new players into the mix.
"The spring season is a great time for player development as everyone gets to play including those players who redshirted last year," said head coach Tim Lenahan.
The 'Cats opened their spring schedule with a 2-1 victory over Vaughn U-18, with goals from first years Tommy Katsiyiannis and Drew Viscomi, before falling to Vaughn's U-23 team, 2-1. On March 3, Northwestern forced a 1-1 draw at Butler thanks to a goal from Jake Roberge.
"We are coming off a very good result on the road against a Sweet 16 team in Butler," said Lenahan. "With reading week, finals and spring break coming up, it is important that our players maintain their conditioning during the break, since we have to play the first round of the Chicago Cup the first week back against a very good UIC team that won the Horizon League last year."
Northwestern will kick off the annual Chicago Cup on April 7 with a semifinal match against UIC in Rockford, Ill. The winner will face either DePaul or Loyola in the Chicago Cup final at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium on April 21.
Before the final of the Chicago Cup, Northwestern will square off with SIUE (2 p.m. CT) and UNO (3:30 p.m. CT) at Martin Stadium on April 14. Chicago's Big Ten Team will finish its spring season at Denver, which reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament in 2016.
"We are looking to find the balance between reestablishing a winning tradition, while continuing to put players in a developmental environment, and I think that this schedule will do that," Lenahan added.
