EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern put on a show at Combe Tennis Center Sunday, winning both matches of its doubleheader with Indiana and UIC in convincing fashion. The Wildcats were led by Jason Seidman and Ben Vandixhorn, who each recorded victories in both contests.
In the early match, the Hoosiers took the first point in doubles competition with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. A win from No. 122 Raheel Manji at No. 1 singles increased the lead to two for the visitors before NU came storming back.
Jason Seidman recorded a straightforward 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5 to put the 'Cats on the board, and A.J. Joshi followed suit with a straight-set win at No. 6 moments later. With three matches still in progress, the score was knotted at two team points apiece.
At No. 4, Ben Vandixhorn and Bennett Crane split the first two frames to force a deciding third. Vandixhorn got up early and didn't look back, winning 6-3 to put the 'Cats just one point away from victory.
The hosts did not have to wait long for the result, as Nick Brookes took care of business at No. 2. The first year took control after dropping his first set, as he beat Antonio Cembellin 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to give Northwestern a 4-2 win over the Hoosiers.
In the evening match, the Wildcats were on the front foot from the start, as wins from No. 1 and No. 2 doubles gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead over UIC.
In singles competition, their dominance continued as Chris Ephron quickly increased the margin to two. The sophomore cruised through his match, winning in straight sets without dropping a single game. Vandixhorn then recorded a victory at No. 2, as Northwestern just needed one more point to seal the contest.
The deciding win came from Seidman, who took down Marco Nanni in two sets. The junior won 6-3, 6-4 in his second career appearance at No. 4 singles to give Chicago's Big Ten Team a 4-0 shutout victory.
The pair of wins improves NU to 6-9 on the season. Indiana drops to 8-7, while UIC falls to 2-7 for the campaign.
The 'Cats will be back in action on Wednesday, March 28 as they hit the road to visit Texas Tech for the final nonconference match of the regular season.
