EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern took down Purdue Saturday afternoon with a dominant, 4-0 victory at Combe Tennis Center. The triumph gives the 'Cats a seventh-straight victory on the year to go along with a perfect 2-0 record in the conference.
Chicago's Big Ten Team started the match off well, picking up the first team point in doubles competition. After the 23rd-ranked pair of Alex Chatt and Lee Or won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, Inci Ogut and Julie Byrne took their set at No. 3 by the same scoreline to clinch the doubles point for the hosts.
As singles play got underway, NU continued its strong form by winning the first set in five of the six matchups. In the first contest to finish, No. 58 Maddie Lipp cruised past Ena Babic of Purdue in straight sets to double the advantage for the 'Cats, losing only one game in each frame.
At No. 2, Lee Or recorded a victory to put Northwestern one point away from clinching the match. The junior, ranked No. 85 nationally, won 6-3, 6-2 against Alex Sabe for her second win in as many days.
Moments later, the clinching point came at No. 6 singles courtesy of Julie Byrne. After taking the first set 6-1, she finished off a 7-5 decision in a back-and-forth second. It marked consecutive match-sealing victories for Byrne, as she also clinched the win over No. 5 Georgia Tech last time out.
No. 50 Erin Larner had taken her first set at No. 1 singles and led 5-4 in the second, but her match went unfinished with Larner just one point away from a victory. Matchups at No. 4 and No. 5 also went unfinished on the afternoon.
The win improves NU to 10-3 on the season and gives the Wildcats an impressive 8-1 mark at home. The Boilermakers drop to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Northwestern will be back in action on Saturday, March 17, hosting Indiana at Combe Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
