EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern continues its season March 2-4 at the 2018 Husky Classic hosted by Washington in Seattle, Washington, where a five-team field will reunite three-fourths of the 2014 NCAA Seattle Regional.
The Wildcats, Huskies and BYU Cougars all competed in the Seattle Regional in 2014, where BYU defeated NU in the opening round before the Wildcats came back through the loser's bracket to top the Cougars and advance to the Regional Championship round. It was Northwestern's sixth appearance on championship Sunday during the NCAA Regional round in the 10 years the current format had been in existence at the time.
For the 2018 Husky Invitational, Portland State and No. 11 Alabama join top-ranked Washington, NU and BYU in comprising the field. Northwestern opens Friday, March 2, at 3:30 p.m. CT/1:30 p.m. PT against Portland State before taking on No. 1 Washington later that night.
On Saturday, the Wildcats start at noon CT/10 a.m. PT with a rematch against the Vikings, then take on BYU immediately after. Getaway Day Sunday features a noon CT/10 a.m. PT contest against the Crimson Tide.
Northwestern is coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, where the Wildcats earned an extra-inning victory over San Diego State for the second time this season and a resounding 12-3 (5) run-rule win against St. John's. Northwestern stole eight bases against the Red Storm, matching the school single-game record set previously in May of 2012 against Illinois.
The Wildcats speed game is off the charts through three weekends of play. Northwestern has stolen 41 total bases, more than double the total of the next highest Big Ten program (Indiana with 17). NU's per-game stolen base mark of 3.15 ranks third in the entire country. The most telling part of that statistic: Northwestern has only been caught stealing twice in 43 tries, while the two programs ranked higher in per-game steals so far this year have been caught 13 times apiece.
Senior Sabrina Rabin broke out of a slow early-season start with a wonderful Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic last week, batting .571 and scoring four runs with five steals in Northwestern's four games. Currently eighth in school history with 211 base hits, the three-time All-Big Ten selection is just five hits away from climbing all the way up into fifth place.
In the circle, sophomore Morgan Newport picked up both of Northwestern's victories at the Mary Nutter. The relief specialist got a victory in that role during a combined extra-inning shutout of San Diego State before winning her first start of the season, which was a complete-game effort in a run-rule of St. John's. Newport enters the Husky Invitational with a 3-1 overall record and a 1.31 ERA.
After this tournament, NU has one more full-weekend tourney on the schedule: The Houston Hilton Plaza Classic hosted by Houston March 9-11.
