EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 24 Northwestern got a victory in doubles and singles wins from Alex Chatt, Erin Larner and Julie Byrne in pulling off a 4-2 victory over seventh-ranked Vanderbilt at Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats improve to 6-3 with the win while Vanderbilt falls to 6-2.
After having their perfect record in doubles snapped against Washington last Saturday, the Wildcats got back on track thanks to a pair of convincing efforts.
At No. 2, the 13th-ranked team of Chatt and Lee Or took care of business against Emily Smith and Emma Kurtz, winning 6-2. At No. 1, the second-ranked duo of Larner and Maddie Lipp easily defeated the 23rd-ranked team of Astra Sharma and Fernanda Contreras, 6-3, putting NU up 1-0 in the match.
The Commodores took a 2-1 lead in the match thanks to victories from 56th-ranked Sharma at No. 1 and Amanda Meyer at No. 5. However, Chatt finished off a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Kurtz at No. 4 to even the match.
With three matches remaining, the Wildcats were in good shape as Byrne (No. 6) and Lipp (No. 3) were up a set while Larner had a convincing third-set lead at No. 2. Byrne managed to finish off Summer Dvorak 7-6 (3), 6-2 at No. 6 and moments later Larner completed an upset victory, taking down fifth-ranked Contreras 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to give Northwestern its third win over a ranked opponent this season.
Northwestern returns to action next Friday when it opens up Big Ten competition at Illinois.
