'Cats Aim For Fifth Midwest Fencing Conference Championship

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 9 Northwestern begins postseason competition this weekend at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in Columbus, Ohio, hosted by Ohio State.

The Wildcats will aim to take home their fifth overall team title and second in three years. The epee squad will try to win its fourth title in a row and become the first squad in program history to do so. The sabre team is looking for its first title since 2016 while foil is trying to claim its first since 2012.

The two-day event features individual weapon competition on Saturday and a team weapon group competition on Sunday. The individual competition will follow a pools and main draw format, with the top fencers in each weapon receiving a bye into the draw.

In the team competition, the overall champion is decided by a combined point total. Winning two out of the three weapon groups clinches the title.

Northwestern last won individual titles in 2016, when Courtney Dumas took the epee gold medal and Alisha Gomez-Shah did the same in sabre. Last season in the individual competitions, Ella Lombard led the 'Cats with a silver medal in epee. Yvonne Chart took home a bronze in foil as did Maddy Curzon in sabre.

In head coach Zach Moss' second year the helm of the program, the #B1GCats have already made history by setting the program record for wins in a season with 47 and longest win steak with a 25-match stretch that spanned four duals.

23 teams will be in attendance in Columbus, including seven other varsity teams and most notably rivals No. 4 Ohio State. Since Notre Dame moved to the ACC ahead of the 2015 season, Ohio State has taken two MFC titles while Northwestern has one.

Northwestern and Ohio State split their regular season series, with the Wildcats winning at Ohio State at the Elite Invitational in November and the Buckeyes returning the favor at the NU Duals in early February.

In the record-setting regular season, the 'Cats were led by senior Anna Tolley in the epee squad, who finished with 48 bout wins. Sharon Chen notched the most out of any foilist with 47 while senior Emine Yücel recorded 44 to lead sabre.

Pauline Hamilton, Katie Van Riper, Sacha Bazzal, Yücel, Lombard and Tolley all crossed the century mark in wins this season, joining Chart and Curzon who had done so prior to this year. Curzon became the only active Wildcat to win 150 bouts.
