Wildcats To Compete in Junior Olympics and World Cups This Weekend

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 9 Northwestern has eight fencers in action this weekend, with six competing at the Junior Olympics in Memphis, Tennessee and two competing overseas at junior World Cup events.
Alexis Browne, Jacqueline Hua, Amy Jia, Alexandra Banin, Pauline Hamilton and Anya Harkness are all fencing at the four day Junior Olympics, the national championships for American fencers born between 1998 and 2004.
First year Sarah Filby is competing at a junior foil World Cup in Mödling, Austria, while fellow classmate Marta Amador Molina is fencing at a junior epee World Cup in Dijon, France.
The Junior Olympics have the same format as a NAC Competition, with a round of pools before direct elimination bouts to determine a champion through the main draw. Fencers receive points for a top-32 finish, and occasionally for a top-64 finish if the field is large enough.
Browne and Hua will compete in the sabre competition on Friday, while Jia and Banin are set to take the strip for the foil event on Monday. Hamilton and Hakrness will start the epee competition on Sunday.
Both junior world cup events take place on Saturday. Amador Molina is looking for a chance to earn her first junior international ranking points in epee, while Filby is trying to increase her point total of 14 and her top-100 junior foil ranking.
Filby previously finished as a quarterfinalist at a satellite World Cup competition in Havana, Cuba in December. Amador Molina led all first-year 'Cats with 47 wins this season.
Browne burst onto the scene in her first year as a Wildcat, posting 35 wins while handling a heavy workload of bouts against tough matchups in duals. Hua won 29 matches with an impressive .784 winning percentage.
Banin racked up 46 wins in her sophomore season, good for an 18-win improvement from last year. Jia has 31 wins of her own in her second season at Northwestern, and fenced in 20 more bouts than last year.
Harkness fenced 64 bouts this season, which led all first-years, and came away with 38 wins. Hamilton added 47 wins to increase her career total to 102, becoming the only sophomore on the team with over 100 victories.
While these eight fencers are in action, the rest of the squad has the weekend to rest as the Wildcats prepare for the postseason, which starts next week at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
