NU In Top-Five After Tough First Round at NorthropGrumman Challenge

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. — Sarah Cho's even-par performance in round one of the NorthropGrumman Regional Challenge helped lead No. 12 Northwestern to a fifth-place standing on Sunday.

The Wildcats, who are nine-over, are only one stroke behind No. 1 UCLA and No. 3 Alabama, who are tied for third. Palos Verdes Golf Club played very difficult for the first 18 holes, with all of the elite teams in competition amassing team scores above par.
The average score of the field in the first day was 75.67, nearly five strokes above par.
Cho, who is tied for eighth after day one, posted a clean card, with two bogeys and two birdies, in the par-71, 6,017-yard course. She trails the pacemaker, Olivia Mehaffey, by three strokes, with 36 holes remaining in the three-day competition.
Four other 'Cats sit in the tightly-packed top-40 after day one, with Stephanie Lau leading the pack at 2-over, standing in 19th place. Janet Mao, who shot a 3-over 74, is tied for 32nd, while Hannah Kim and Monica Matsubara (individual entry) are both tied for 39th with their 4-over round. Brooke Riley is tied for 92nd with her first-round 82.
No. 12 Northwestern joins No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Alabama, No. 5 Stanford, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 8 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Texas, No. 11 USC, No. 18 Florida, No. 23 Wake Forest, and No. 25 Washington at the prestigious event. The rest of the field includes Arizona, Baylor, Ohio State San Diego State, Tennessee, and UNLV.
Round two will take place tomorrow, February 12, starting at 11 a.m. CT.
