‘Cats Bring Home Wins and Season Bests from Big Al Invite and ACC/B1G Challenge

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. – Competition began this afternoon at the ACC/B1G Challenge and wrapped up at the Big Al Challenge hosted by Princeton. The 'Cats continued to shine with multiple first place finishes and new season bests.
 
Senior Olivia Rosendahl continued her dominance, bringing the ACC/B1G Challenge Platform title back to Evanston after scoring 317.40 points. Rosendahl led the 1-2-3 sweep of the event that brought in big points for the B1G team.
 
Sophomore Calypso Sheridan came away with the newest addition to the Northwestern record book with a new personal best and school record in the 200 breast. Sheridan touched the wall in 2:08.03 just behind American Record Holder, Lilly King of Indiana. 
 
At the Big Al Invite, the 'Cats got off to a fast start with a win from sophomore DJ Hwang in the 1650 free. The Wildcats had three other first place finishes on the final day of competition from the women's 200 back, the men's 3 meter dive and men's 400 free relay. First-year Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson outscored his competition by over 15 points in the 3-meter dive, wrapping up a stellar weekend after yesterday's showing in the platform and 1-meter dive. Senior Ben Magliato also scored valuable points for the 'Cats in the 3-meter dive, scoring 305.40 points and securing third place. Senior Eryn Scannell brought home 17 points for the women's team in the 1-meter dive scoring 265.50 points which would earn her second place.
 
Emma Theobald showed her grit, scoring 20 big points for the Wildcats in the 200 back in a time of 2:00.80, which is also a new seasons best for the first-year. In the 200 back, Northwestern had three top-five finishes with a sixth place finish by Nicole Aarts and first-year Miriam Guevara's ninth place finish.  In the men's 200 back, first-year Ryan Gridley was the top Northwestern finisher in a time of 1:48.64, securing fourth place. Tyler Lis and Patrick Gridley also scored points for the 'Cats with 9th and 11th place finishes respectively.
 
In the 100 free, both the men and women had three top 20 finishers that scored valuable points for the Wildcats. On the women's side, junior Malorie Han led the charge with a sixth place finish in  51.48, followed by Jasmine Hellmer and Melissa Melnick who finished 11th and 19th respectively. For the men, first-year Andrew Zhang also finished sixth followed by Liam Gately and Peter Lewczyk in 12th and 14th.

In the 200 breast, first-year Tara Vovk touched in a seasons best 2:17.52 to secure third place, followed closely by teammates Sophie Angus and Rebecca Kamau who finished 4th and 6th respectively.  The 'Cats remained on the hunt in the 200 fly with senior Alex Grimes as the top finisher for NU in 2:04.44 which secured 12 Northwestern points, followed by Hellmer who finished ninth. On the men's side, Justin Hanson was the 'Cats top finisher in a time of 1:50.70 for sixth place.
 
The 'Cats wrapped up competition in Princeton with the 400 free relay which was highlighted by a big win from the men who out touched Princeton by .78 seconds. The team of R. Gridley, Gately, Lewczyk and Zhang touched the wall in 2:59.16 and brought home 40 points for Northwestern. The women had two teams that placed top five in of the 400 free relay. The team of Han, Theobald, Tseng, Vovk and Aarts touched in 3:23.78 to secure third, followed closely by the team of Aarts, Grimes, Lara and  Guevara who were fourth.
 
After two days of competition the Wildcats earned second and third place finishes overall for them women and men respectively.
 
Day two of competition of the ACC/B1G Challenge will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET.
