'Cats Host In-State Trio For Home Opener

10/24/2018 4:40:00 PM | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving

Northwestern will play host to a trio of local challengers for their first home meet of the season this Friday. Both teams return to the pool to take on cross-town competitors UIC and University of Chicago in a tri-dual, while the women's team will also continue Big Ten play in a matchup against Illinois.

Last weekend, Jeremy Kipp's 'Cats traveled to Ann Arbor to face off against No. 3 Michigan. Though both teams fell to the Wolverines, last season's standout stars sophomore Calypso Sheridan and senior diver Olivia Rosendahl continued to shine. Rosendahl, the reigning 2018 Big Ten Diver of the Year and NCAA Platform Diving National Champion, maintained her dominance over the diving board with a win in the 1-meter event. Sheridan took home wins in the 100 and 200 back.

Highlights from the men's side all came from new additions to the squad. Three first years grabbed second-place finishes, with diver Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson placing second in the 3-meter event, Andrew Zhang in the 100 free, and Ryan Gridley in both the 100 and 200 back.

For the University of Chicago, this meet will kick off of their season. At UIC, both teams sit at 0-1, with a loss for the women's squad coming at the hands of Indiana State, and the men's squad falling to Michigan State. The Fighting Illini hold a 3-1 record, also falling to Indiana State, and with victories over Michigan State, Southern Illinois, and Illinois State.

Last season, the 'Cats dominated both UIC and University of Chicago in a tri-dual meet. The men's team has bested both opponents in tri-duals for the past three years straight. In 2016, the women's squad also took down the Flames and the Maroons by over 150 points each. With last year's win over Illinois, the women moved to 20-7 all-time. The Wildcats have not lost to their southerly neighbors in over 10 years.

The meet will begin at 5 p.m on Friday afternoon in the Norris Aquatics Center. Fans are encouraged to park in the North Garage of the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion.
