'Cats Fall to Badgers in Double Overtime

10/24/2018 9:44:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern ended the Big Ten regular season Wednesday evening with a match against Wisconsin that required double-overtime. The Badgers prevailed, 2-1, in NU's ninth contest of the season to go to additional periods.

The loss drops Chicago's Big Ten Team to 4-8-5 on the campaign, finishing with a 0-5-3 conference mark. Wisconsin moves to 8-5-2 overall and 5-2 in the Big Ten.

The first half played out as a tight defensive contest, with three shots on target between the two squads but no real scoring opportunities as it stood 1-1 at the break.

In the 66th minute, the hosts struck first after Camden Buescher made his way down the sideline before playing a deep cross into the box. Sean Lynch controlled the ball and played it to Jose Del Valle on the top of the box, who beat the first defender before rolling a left-footed shot into the far corner. The goal was the first as a Wildcat for the first year from Madrid, Spain.

Wisconsin applied pressure in the final 20 minutes, forcing two blocks and a save from Miha Miskovic before finding the equalizer with just under six minutes to play. Isaac Shlenker tallied his third goal of the season for the Badgers as overtime beckoned.

The first extra period ended without a goal, with the only two shots for the Badgers saved by Miskovic. Three minutes into the second overtime, Noah Melick recorded the first shot for either team and found the upper corner to give UW the victory.

Northwestern will be back in action on Friday evening when it hosts Concordia in the regular season finale. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at Martin Stadium.
